What Restaurant Makes Your Favorite Burger?

Bacon Swiss Burger from Seaboard Cafe

Burgers are the quintessence of summer cook outs. By and far, hamburgers are one of America’s most loved, or at least most consumed foods. Many studies have shown that the average American eats three burgers a week. While most of us would boast our homemade burgers as the best, about 72% of burgers are eaten out at restaurants, so we want to know what Raleigh restaurant makes your favorite burger? In other words, where’s the beef?

Tim
While I have to admit that I believe the Borough has the best hamburger with the 1/2 lb Brute Squad, Seaboard Cafe is still my favorite burger destination. Set behind Logan’s Trading Company, Seaboard Cafe has dining open to the outdoors on the old railroad station platform. Set amongst the herbs and flowers, lunchtime lends itself to the familiar feeling of a savory cook out. Unlike places that grind their beef daily, the burger is not offered medium rare, none-the-less, it is consistently flavorful and juicy. They always have a basic burger and cheeseburger as well as a bacon swiss burger, pictured above, but the frequently featured burger specials are what really makes Seaboard Cafe my favorite burger joint. Recently I had one topped with fresh jalapeno and pineapple sliced and grilled. I’ve also been treated to pimento cheese on a burger, and while I never would have thought of it, I intend to mimic it at home soon. If you want to know the daily feature before heading over, they are really good about posting it online daily.

Karen
I could be wrong about this, but I have the feeling that Five Guys Burgers & Fries, tucked into a little corner near the movie theater at North Hills, is the only Zagat-rated burger shack in town. And it’s with good reason: succulent, juicy burgers with an unlimited amount of free toppings and fries made with fresh potatoes and a note on the menu that tells you where they came from (location changes daily). Plus, all-you-can-eat peanuts to munch on while you’re waiting for your order. I originally encountered Five Guys about ten years ago in D.C. (they’re pretty well-known throughout Virginia), and I’ve recently read that Michelle Obama is a big fan. I have a feeling her Secret Service detail knows the location of every Five Guys in the U.S.

Five Guys is no frills. It’s counter-service only, and they call your number when your order is ready. Think Char-Grill in an indoor setting. And its proximity to the theater means you probably don’t want to go there on a Saturday afternoon because it will be PACKED with a bunch of screaming kids. The only drawback is that they don’t serve alcohol, but that’s kind of a small price to pay for such a great burger.

Bernie Burger from Player’s Retreat

David
When I think of the Player’s Retreat, I think of whiskey, and their huge selection of spirits. But I also think about leaving the YMCA and chowing down on one of Gus’ burgers.  PR grinds their own Black Angus beef,  much like the fabled Raleigh Times. What’s weird is that I never expected the smoky PR to have great burgers- but they are absolutely fantastic- like a picture perfect backyard burger right out of the fifties.  Their simple variations on the classics are excellent, such as the Wolfpack Burger served up Carolina style with chili, slaw and mustard, and the Bernie Burger, named after one of the original owners, topped with bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion & mayo. All the burgers come with house made chips- all at a very reasonable price. I like to go hide out in Players Retreat late in the afternoon, have a burger and a beer and a game of pool- and forget about that fast moving world outside- because at PR it’s always old school.

Billie
As a vegetarian, I’ve become quite familiar with Raleigh’s veggie burger offerings. Honorable mentions go to “The Redbeard” veggie burger at The Borough and the veggie burger at The Raleigh Times, but my favorite is the black bean burger from The Square Rabbit. The Rabbit is only lunch, and only takeout and catering, and their specials menu rotates daily, but the black bean burger is always there, and always good. It’s a hearty vegetarian black bean patty that’s grilled so it’s soft on the inside and just a bit crisp on the outside - lovely. It’s served on a pita or whole wheat bread with fresh lettuce, tomato and sprouts, cheese and “Jamaican Relish” optional (which I would not recommend skipping!!). It’s freshly put together while you wait, and the hot nuttiness of the black bean burger, next to crunchy cool veggies, and with a little tangy sweetness from the Jamaican relish is a collection of textures and flavors that compliment each other beautifully. At under $4, it’s a heck of a deal, and perfect for a lunch picnic downtown.

Ladye Jane
I’m not the biggest burger person in the world. I rarely eat them, and am pretty picky about the ones I do eat. I don’t like them really thick, actually, the thinner the better. For me, a Char-Grill burger is the perfect happy medium. Great burger, not too thick, but still has great taste. Half the fun is ordering at the window, joking around with the guys working inside and standing around talking with other customers while you’re waiting for your food. Everyone seems a little more friendly when they’re standing in line waiting on their Char-Grill, and there’s a reason the place has been a Raleigh institution since the late 1950s.

Although Porter’s and The Raleigh Times definitely have the two most solid burgers in the area (in my opinion), one burger that really knocks my socks on fox off is the Inferno Burger at Mojoe’s Burger Joint on Glenwood South. I usually eat my burgers with Jalapeños and BBQ sauce with any cheese that isn’t swiss.

Luckily, the Inferno has just that, Jalapeños, Pepper Jack cheese, cajun seasoning (and I ask for a side of BBQ sauce). Berkeley Cafe has a similar burger, as do many restuarants, but Mojoe’s Inferno, when enjoyed with a Corona on the outdoor patio in the summer definitely keeps the heat up!

Plus, $1 burgers after 10pm and that awesome sign out front thanking you for your service? Gotta give it to Mojoe’s for offering a great burger on the cheap and humor while they are at it.

Rusty
There’s no shortage of places to grab a burger in Raleigh, but the outdoor dining and location of MoJoe’s has everybody else beat. The perfect late-night stop on Glenwood for a beer and a bite, you can get a burger for a dollar after ten. The kitchen is open until 1:30 most nights, and they do a burger right, every time. Then there is the one pound Hall of Fame burger, which can get you the not-so-unique distinction of having your photo on the wall. I can’t say personally that I’ve had the pleasure, but I can most definitely vouche for the Raleigh Burger. So if you’re looking for a place to sit outside, grab a burger and an ice cold beer, while watching the club-crowd make their way to all the hip, cool places on Glenwood South, MoJoe’s is your spot.

MoJoes by far has the best burgers around. Closly followed by CharGrill.

  • Chris06/26 11:08 AM

I know it’s not “downtown” but Fat Daddy’s is the best around.  Well worth the drive out Glenwood.

    1. Fat Daddy’s
    2. Raleigh Times
    3. MoJoes

  • JWH06/26 11:09 AM

You can’t go wrong with Seaboard Cafe. There burgers are always consistent, but the best part are the toppings. For the bacon-swiss burger, it’s thick cut bacon with two healthy slices of cheese, fresh lettuce and onions and flavorful, meaty tomatoes. I usually pull tomatoes off my burger, but never at Seaboard!

Char-Grill would be my second fave.

  • wg06/26 11:41 AM

    PLAYERS RETREAT!!!

  • bb06/26 12:03 PM

5 Guys takes top billing but that is a NOVA transplant so Players Retreat is definitely a close second.

  • PRGuy06/26 12:16 PM

Best burger I ever had was from the Angus Barn while doing some volunteer work on their property. It was made from ground filet mignon. Not even sure if it’s on the menu, perhaps only in the Wild Turkey Lounge.

  • Varmint06/26 12:25 PM

Oh, this is always a good argument, but for me, if I can’t get my burger cooked rare or medium rare, then it’s hard for me to claim that it’s one of the top burgers in town.  So I’m ultimately limited to places that grind their own meat, such as the Raleigh Times, Porter’s, or the PR.  And even then, the cuts of beef that they grind aren’t the most flavorful in the world.  I might just have to open my own burger joint to top all others!

  • jnw06/26 12:26 PM

Char Grill—the professionals. Everyone else is just pretending.

  • Timmy06/26 12:45 PM

“Many studies have shown that the average American eats three burgers a week.”

No way.  If that’s for real, no wonder obesity is epidemic in the U.S.

  • Les06/26 01:00 PM

Without a doubt, the Sawmill Taproom makes the best burgers in town. They have a number of other restaurants in the chain which I have not tried, but I would assume the others would serve burgers that are equally as good.

  • Andy S.06/26 01:09 PM

Within the Raleigh city limits, Char-Grill and The Borough are probably my favorite places for burgers, but hands-down the best burgers in the Triangle are found at Abbey Road in Cary.

Abbey Road is probably the only thing that justifies not razing Cary to the ground, in fact.

  • ct06/26 01:24 PM

Hard to argue with Five Guys as the best chain. They’re taking market share fast from Char Grill, Back Yard Burgers, and Wendys.

  • Andy S.06/26 01:27 PM

dctransplant, I think maybe you haven’t learned the language here yet.  I’ve lived here for 14 years, long enough to figure out that when something in the Triangle is defined as “hip” and/or “cool”, that basically translates to “popular with aging frat boys and vapid women who like aging frat boys”.

  • John06/26 01:28 PM

Lots of good choices here but I am torn between MoJoes, Raleigh Times and Five Guys. Sawmill, Village Draft House etc., burgers are okay but they are obviously frozen patties. Same with Fat Daddy’s.

  • gd06/26 01:35 PM

I voted Raleigh Times, although for me personally, Sitti isn’t far behind

I can’t vote mojoes cause I’m not into frozen burgers so most of the places on here, are a no go.

  • highjoeltage06/26 02:02 PM

I know its not really a traditional burger but the royale at Pooles is rad.

  • roi06/26 02:18 PM

I vote for the PR’s burgers…..been eating them for 30 years.  Of course the burgers at Crowley’s off Dixie Trail on Medlin Drive are a very close second. I haven’t tried MoJoe’s, but $1 after 10 PM sounds like a real deal.

  • bomb bomb06/26 02:36 PM

mojoes?! that place is awful. the burgers are obviously frozen and taste like hell.

  • Tyler06/26 02:39 PM

@dctransplant methinks thou may have missed some sarcasm… “Club-crowd” should have been clue #1. Sounds like Andy S. has the right idea.

  • Bradley06/26 03:01 PM

MoJoe’s half lb. burger + onion rings FTW

  • Suzanne06/26 03:41 PM

If you break it down by places that grind their own meat - which allows you to order it less than mw - then there are only a few places to really get a great burger. Porter’s tops my list, because the quality of meat and bun push it past the Raleigh Times burger. Toppings are awesome at places like MoJoe’s, but when it comes to good beef, Porter’s all the way.

  • raleighgirl06/26 03:42 PM

Just go try a burger at Player’s Retreat and you will then know what the best burger in Raleigh tastes like.  seriously.

  • Meghan06/26 04:19 PM

Sullivan’s, in the bar. And I think its still half-priced menu on Thursdays and Saturdays

  • JRD06/26 07:10 PM

    Uuuuuuh Melvins?.........

  • Drew3D06/26 08:07 PM

The Busy Bee serves rare and medium rare burgers as well.  I had a tasty medium rare bleu cheese burger last time I was there.

Is the Sitti burger only available at lunch?

  • jfo06/26 08:44 PM

chains-5 guys for their array of toppings, but cook-out for that true backyard bbq taste

non-chains—porter’s, pr, burger hut and if you’re in cary, god forbid, harrison’s.

  • smitty06/26 09:48 PM

I second Busy Bee.  5-guys is horrible.

  • J V06/27 11:38 AM

    The Borough’s burger is banging.

And if you are especially daring, try getting the burger put inside of the Uber Wisconsin. Holy cow! Literally.

Also, you are paying the same price as the Times Bar but you get a generous side included.

  • WE06/27 12:06 PM

If you want a great burger at Mojoe’s you MUST order the Big Mo, their 1/2 lb. burger. The regular burgers are frozen patties which no one likes; the Big Mo can be cooked to order and is *delicious*.

  • Karen06/27 12:07 PM

I should have also written about Cloos Coney Island in Mission Valley. They have great burgers!

  • Bill06/27 01:04 PM

I love MoJoe’s and Players Retreat for a good beef burger.  For a change, however, I recommend the Veggie Burger at TirNaNog.  It is one of the best things I have ever had.  Crispy on the outside, mushy in the middle, its a home made recipe based on brown rice and lentils. I am not even close to being a vegetarian (mmmm….Bacon!), but I can’t stop picking one of these up to go every time I get hungry and can’t figure out what I want.

  • Carl06/27 05:22 PM

The Royale at Poole’s IS amazing albeit not a traditional burger.

I wouldn’t feed Five Guys to my dogs.

  • wow06/27 09:41 PM

Busy Bee Tom and jack burger , no doubt.

  • liza06/27 10:03 PM

    Cloos Coney Island, Mission Valley.

  • Christian06/28 05:40 PM

Hmmm, this is a tough call, but I ate the Brute Squad at The Borough the other night (added fresh jalapenos, of course) and in my opinion it was one of the better burgers I’ve eaten.  Took me a minute to figure out the bright pink “special sauce,” but it tasted similar to thousand island dressing and was actually pretty good. MoJoes is also good, but they have an unfair advantage since it’s a “burger joint” and there’s so much variety there.

  • The Jenius06/29 06:56 AM

Cloos is by far the best burger in raleigh. Dan makes them with love.

  • Dale06/29 08:43 AM

All these are great burgers, I’m sure, though I haven’t tried them all. Not to be overlooked, though they often are, are Hardee’s thickburgers. A good charcoal-broiled Angus beef burger at a great price.

  • JT06/29 09:48 AM

If you can’t order it med-rare then it doesn’t deserve to be on the list or even close.  I view a burger as a sacred meal so if I am eating one it’s generally only from Times or Porter’s.  I am looking forward to trying PR’s though.

  • zr06/29 10:50 AM

Fat Daddy’s is by far the best.  They get their beef from the angus barn, and grind it in house.  They also have the best buns that are baked fresh daily on site.

  • thirsty06/29 11:03 AM

Five Guy’s take the best burger crown all day long.  That’s not even a fair fight.

    PR’s burger was disgusting.

  • Todd06/29 12:57 PM

I have become quite fond of the Busy Bee’s Sacre Bleu burger, but Times, Chargrill, and PR have great ones too.  I love an occasional Wolfpack burger at PR with wings and beer.  Melvins is awesome too, and CHEAP!!

  • burgeoningfoodie06/29 01:42 PM

Does anyone know about the burgers at The Burger Hut near NC State?

  • kg06/29 02:04 PM

tried the borough the other night and while i could say that the taste of the burger stood out against, say, char-grill or mojoe’s, the bun bummed me out.  it was just too much bun.  the burger though, was good.

    my champ remains rt.

  • Les06/29 02:17 PM

As a result of this conversation I went to Porter’s Saturday night specifically to try their burger. I ordered it medium rare, and it came medium at best. The taste was decent, but not outstanding. I was put off by the fact that if I didn’t want fries (which I didn’t) there would be a $4 charge to substitute another side. This would never happen at Sawmill Taproom, which offers a choice of at least 6 sides at no charge. Furthermore, when I order medium rare at Sawmill that’s what I get. I can only come to the same conclusion: the flavor and quality at Sawmill Taproom are far superior to anything else I have yet tried in Raleigh.

  • Dan from Detroit06/29 02:53 PM

With no White Castle sliders to sate my late night hunger, a drunken trip to Mojoe’s is as good as it gets around here - specially for a buck after 10pm

  • David06/29 04:09 PM

@Les Sawmill Taproom and Village draft house are owned by the same folks and have mostly the same menu/burgers etc.  Agreed that they are better- and salad as a side, like you said, is free smile

  • currincy06/29 06:24 PM

I know it’s full of popped collars and sandals and shit, but Hi Five’s burgers rule so hard. As Millsaps would say, I have a “mega-boner” for them. Other than that, Village Draft House. Also, cheese fries poll soon?

  • Alex06/30 09:33 AM

Raleigh Best Burgers:  PR (no doubt) and will be trying Porters soon.

1st:  Federal (durham) has the best burger in the triangle.

    2nd Place: Abbey Road (cary)and for a chain 5-Guys

3rd Place:  There is no burger worth listing.

  • Scott06/30 11:19 AM

I gotta put a word in for the as-yet-unmentioned Hayes Barton Cafe in Five Points. They only have burgers during the lunchtime, but, man, Frank + Co. do ‘em up right.

  • M06/30 01:01 PM

Jackson Hole at the Village Draft House (and its siblings).  Yuuuummmmm.

  • Seann06/30 04:37 PM

MoJoes!!!!  Hands down, best burgers in town!

  • RaleighNative06/30 07:31 PM

Had a Black and Blue burger at Sawmill today. Absolutely one of the best in town. As are most of the varieties (over a dozen) on their menu. The El Paso and the California are also favorites. Of course, I work closer to Sawmill than the PR. So location also comes into play. If I have the extra 20 minutes to spare, I’ll make the trip down to the PR or Old Crowleys in a heartbeat. Their burgers are fantastic. And the atmosphere and history of old haunts makes them even better. Damn… I’m hungry.

  • RaleighRob07/01 08:21 AM

Winston’s Grille has the best burger hands down.  They also have freshly squeezed lemonade everyday to go along with the burger.

  • burgeoningfoodie07/01 09:14 AM

I guess that means no one has been to the Burger Hut.

Anywho, I had a burger at Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill once that was really good (though pricey) and wasn’t purely ground beef if I recall correctly.

  • RaleighNative07/01 10:04 AM

Burgeoningfoodie, Burger Hut is OLD SCHOOL! I have been many, many times. Quite regularly when I was a senior at Broughton High School, over 20 years ago. And they had a great burger back then. I can’t vouch for it today, as it’s been too long since my last trip. But you’ve inspired me to find out. I love little authentic places like the HUT.

  • Carl07/01 10:48 AM

    Old Crowley’s ?
Really ? i will have to try that.
Crowley’s definitely is one of the few soulfull Raleigh dives left.
Love to hit that place right at closing time. Best people watching albiet not the best drink selects.
But all the same, the vibe in there surpasses any nuevo-cool bar, in my opinion.

    Definitely not for everybody.
My wife won’t go there without sanitizing her hands on our exit.

    The best.

  • Meg07/01 02:26 PM

Tom & Jack Burger @ Busy Bee!

  • Ronnie Black07/02 03:25 PM

No one has mentioned it but a Bacon Cheeseburger from the Hayes-Barton Grill is my personal favorite burger in town.

You can’t go wrong with Char-grill either.  Burger Hut, Capital Ice Market and Mo’Joes are pretty good too.

  • old social worker07/06 02:57 PM

Coquette in North Hills and Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill offer unexpectedly great burgers.  And huge servings of perfect fries.

  • JKGF07/06 03:16 PM

(Karen) If you like Five Guys, then you would love Z Burger.  Z Burger has waaayyy better burgers and there are more options.  You can get a burger, veggie burger, turkey burger or even a cheesesteak.  The milkshake menu is another plus because you can get any flavor from grape to birthday cake. Next time you’re in D.C. try this spot.
