After last year's Rapper's Delight II 7", Whatever Brains are moving into full length territory. The band will be celebrating the release of their self-titled debut LP this Thursday, July 7th at Kings. The Invisible Hand and Nantan Lupan are set to open the show.
The opening track on Whatever Brains sounds like a gang of people who take over the party as it starts to wind down. "You have amphetamines", the narrator explains, "Sleep is obsolete." It is a new kind of party for you. "The Fisher" is a two minute drill that makes way for the albums next track, the faster yet shorter "Shelves". "Gross Urge" threatens to keep the albums frantic pace going. However, the tempo suddenly takes a one-eighty and you begin to settle into the album.
Standout's like "Withnail" do for Bruce Robinson's classic what Scott Walker did for Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. Songs made familiar on their "Trim Jeans" CDR get the redux treatment suited for a proper album release. "Bedsores" is a giant tip of the hat to the lewder lyrics of Ben Waller, particularly when opening the song with "tear yourself from practicing your moan, it's perfect, you should leave it alone." The songs on Whatever Brains showcase various sonic results, one minute sounding crisp and sharp, the next as if the sounds where filtered through a beer can.
Sorry State Records, a punk/hardcore label out of Carrboro will be releasing the LP. The color gatefold cover contains a 16 page booklet with lyrics and great collage art. The album also comes with a download card of the LP and the bands 4 previous 7" EPs. The Invisible Hand's bassist, Thomas Dean, created the eye catching artwork for Whatever Brains.
You can check out a remix version of the LP for free on their tumblr page. The demixed version drops July 7th.
Doors at 9pm, Admission $6. All Ages. Kings is located at 14. W Martin Street in downtown Raleigh.
Kings Barcade Whatever Brains Invisible Hand
Kings has some great bands come through but the intensity of the bass they pump out is painful to those in the club. Shame….keeps me and others away and I can just imagine how those feel that live in the area. Ugh….
