As many of you may know, NC State has a great independent radio station, WKNC, that runs 24 hours a day at 88.1 on you FM dial, just to the left from WUNC, our local NPR station. Just recently, WKNC launched a new snazzy front page to their website. When you click on link, the previous website seems to still be present, but if the new front page is any indication, a completely new website is in store for the near future. WKNC is not NC State’s first radio station, but it has been around since 1966 playing lots of great independent music and features lots of in studio performances by a variety of local bands in the triangle.
Considering the fact that both Bickett Gallery and Kings Barcade have vacated their buildings and the local music scene has taken a huge hit, WKNC and Tir Na Nog Irish Pub have launched a weekly local beer / local band night, promoting local music free of charge with a specific beer on special each week. Located at 218 South Blount St., Tir Na Nog Irish Pub, has become a great venue to see local bands, many of which are on WKNC daily. This is a great collaboration and the brain child of Chris Tamplin, bartender at with help from Kelly from WKNC. For booking, contact Chris at
. This week is J Roddy Walston and the Business but next week is a big show with both The Loners and Goner, both great Raleigh bands. Go check it out sometimes and tell them Jed from NewRaleigh sent you…he might give you a high five!
Check the daily Rock Report for more information on local bands playing in the area.

From WKNC’s site: “WKNC is about 90% funded by student fees. What doesn’t come from student fees is made by local businesses sponsoring air time. Since we are a non-profit organizations, individuals can also make tax deductible contributions if they desire. However, since we are mostly funded by the university, it alleviates the stress other non-commercial stations have of massive fund raisers.“
