Yes, you read that headline correctly. Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre has recruited one of the most, if not THE most, influential rap groups to grace its stage in April. Their first album Return to the 36 Chambers was an underground hit and I still fondly remember waiting in line at midnight at a local record store in my hometown to buy WuTang Forever in the mid 90s. Almost every original Wu-member that will be on stage has released their fair share of solo albums and collaborated on each other other member’s albums.
Their newest album 8 Diagrams isn’t the best of their catalog and there was lots of strife between members surrounding the release of the album. As well, there was lots of controversy about their sampling of The Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The album will need a listen before attending the show although I am sure the back catalog will surface in full Wu force.
Tickets go on sale Friday March 7 and at $45, it is probably the most expensive show ever at Lincoln, but definitely the most notable in years. It will sell out I’m sure. Ghostface, Raekwon, Methodman, Gza, Inspektah Deck, U-God, Masta Killer, Cappadonna, Street Life will all show up and may just share some C.R.E.A.M. with the crowd.
A not to be missed show, even if The Wu-Tang Clan has been over shadowed in the past couple of years by many newer rappers. But, these new rappers wouldn’t exist without The Clan. From Shaolin Shadowboxing to The Wu Tang Sword Style, you might wanna catch up on your classic kung-fu flicks and chessboxing before entering the Wu.
