Merge has announced that they are hosting a 20 Year Anniversary Fest called XX Merge, five days of music by Merge artists past and present in North Carolina. The event is scheduled for July 22-26, 2009 and will probably be held at Durham and Chapel Hill venues such as DPAC, Cat’s Cradle, Local 506 and Carolina Theatre. Raleigh will most likely be left out of the mix. A couple of music venues in Raleigh should definitely try to be a part of this.
Could this mean Arcade Fire, Spoon, Magnetic Fields and Lambchop will be coming back to the Triangle? Let’s hope so.
Will this same fest be called XXX in 10 more years? That could be quite interesting.

I dunno, I heard they’d looked into booking the Arcade Fire into Moore Square on Saturday the 25th, but were told that Downtown Live already had Hoobastank and Papa Roach lined up for that day. Sounds like y’all already have a Full Plate of ROCK.

Merge’s roster has been pretty stagnant for the last 5-10 years. My New Years hope for the area is that maybe they branch out a little and take a chance on some fresh artists/bands with some new sounds. Maybe even sign some locals, that used to be an important part of their success.
Maybe Breadwinner will come out of retirement for this show-they were the only band on Merge I ever gave a flip about.
