The Alexander YMCA on Hillsborough Street is nearing the completion of its new incarnation.  Most recently the new lobby, an aquatics center, racquetball courts and family locker rooms have opened.

The aquatics center is a brightly lit 6-lane pool with space for swim lessons and adult water fitness. Other members can also watch swimmers from above as visitors walking into the new lobby first see a window running the full width of the pool.

The new lobby is a cavernous space with lounge and bistro style seating, allowing for public space for a variety of activities.  The lobby also includes a small chapel named for Dr. Albert Edwards, the pastor emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church, and a quiet place one can quickly duck into upon entry or exit.  Along with new YMCA offices, WakeMed also has space for its healthy lifestyle programs in the new building.

Soon, as construction completes, there will be a rehabilitation center, more parking, and a proper driveway from Hillsborough Street. “We are really looking forward to the final completion of the new building,” said Brad Davis, branch director. “Our members have been so patient and supportive throughout construction, and it has been remarkable to see the facility come together.”

It’s a beautiful building, but it has a lot of wasted space.  The old Y had some good things that the new one doesn’t have.  Men’s locker room area is smaller for twice as many members; the steam room and sauna are not as big as the old ones; and the weight lifting area is much too small for the number of members trying to use that area…very impressive entry, but wasted space. better Tv’s however.

Yeah, I agree that the weigh room is not set up well.  Weights on opposite sides of the cardio, you have to walk back and forth over and over again…and the free weights are placed in a cramped/awkward space.

Beautiful Facility…great spinning room, b-ball courts, and pool.  I never saw the old mens locker room, but the new one is great.  It may be smaller, but its still huge and rarely crowded.

In response to Hackles the present “Men’s Health Center”  should be called the “Men’s Locker Room”.  You should have seen and used the old one….larger space and lots of exercise equipment and free weights there in.  It was truly a “Men’s Health Center"and not a locker room.
Having played years ago on the b-ball courts, the new courts are a plus and there is a walking/running track above the courts. There are some advantages, but some things are not as good as before
