Why I Love Derby, and Why You Should Too

The best description I have come across so far for derby, I found on the Texas Roller Derby website: “outrageous production value and fabulous women on skates”. This is as accurate and as succinct a summary of this amazing phenomenon as you will ever find. Fabulous is always a matter of opinion, but what sets roller derby apart from other athletic pursuits is that it is owned, operated, managed, and marketed completely by women. I can’t think of any other sport in the history of sporting that better represents the empowerment of women. Derby sends a message through the ages, through the races, and throughout the nation that women are just as passionate about their athleticism, and just as committed to their sport as men.

Raleigh Wide Open 2, RWO2

This years big downtown event looks to be shaping up nicely, er, yeah some awesome bands! I swear.  Eddie Money will be headlining playing for the large Raleigh population of 45+ year olds, seeing as how his last hit album came out in 1977. Yes folks, we are that hip. Following Mr. Money’s Two Tickets to Paradise we will get a fireworks show, a variable Pyrotechnic Pageant as labeled by the marketing speak.  Well I for one will be out for the Pageant, nothing a southerner likes more than Pageants.

Hey I am as excited as anyone about the redevelopment going on downtown and celebrating it is the right thing to do.  But our city leaders both in the government and commercial sectors need to drop some cash and throw an event with a budget that can support artists relevant in this decade. I say this in light of the next weekend’s downtown Asheville festival Bele Chere which acts as a huge tourist attraction.  The city is one twelfth the size of Raleigh!

Where to see Raleigh Fireworks on July 4th

The Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department presents a July 4 celebration at the N.C. State Fairgrounds from 2:30 to 10:30 p.m. Activities include carnival games, rides and inflatables, a magic show, pony rides and the Mustang Club Car Show. Fireworks begin at 9:15 p.m. Admission and activities are free.

If you are planning on going just for the fireworks- be warned- mass insanity will ensue.  Raleigh folk take their fireworks seriously!  Traffic on 440/1 will backup and people will park on both sides of the highway through the area over Wade Avenue and Hillsborough street.
