It was only time before punk and electro combined to form a spastic collision of the two. Dan Deacon, Video Hippos, and local favorites Future Islands are a strain of electro-punk that has been gaining momentum over the past couple of years. Bonde do Role is an international example of this collapse of attitude, youthful aggression, and punk with guitars and sequencers. Generally, punk is known for short songs that are loud and aggressive and involve few chords and a lot of repetitive sounds and lyrics. Electro is not known for short songs but is known for lots of repetition and energy. Combine the two and you have an overload of passion and volume. The Death Set and Team Robespierre will show up in downtown Raleigh with a mission to smash all stereotypes mentioned in the previous three sentences.

At the end of our conversation with Mike Robinson from Annuals in January, he mentioned an upcoming show that was being staged in the Raleigh area between them and their alter-ego Sedona. Sedona has changed their name to Sunfold and plan to release their first album in six years, a split between them and Annuals, who capped off WKNC’s Double Barrel Benefit in grand fashion. Lonnie Walker and I Was Totally Destroying It are also on the bill. The show is Friday at The Brewery and will definitely sell out so get there early, it should be a rocking night.
Tonight, Paleface plays Tir Na Nog which should be a great show, especially since it is free!

Is Raleigh’s largest and hippest independent music store facing extinction? News has been circulated today that the Chapel Hill location is calling it quits. Could this mean that the Hillsborough Street location may be next in the demise of independent music stores?

Before the collapse of Kings Barcade, there were a couple of local bands that regularly rocked the venue. A Rooster for the Masses was one of the most notable ones, but shortly after Kings was demolished, a couple of members of Rooster decided to move to New York City, demolishing one of the better bands in the Triangle. Almost one year later, Rooster has re-emerged with a couple of new members and a couple of new songs, which they will debut this evening on WKNC. I received exclusive previews of each track and they sound as though Rooster never took a hiatus.

DBR and the Mission is a well loved group that plays symphonic fusion music that blends “funk, rock, hip-hop and classical music into a new, personal sonic vision.” The 9 member group is playing a show Saturday night at State’s Stewart Theater and tickets are $28. Whats better, the group is also playing a FREE show at Lump at 7pm tomorrow night, Friday the 8th.
