We recently reported on the signs that popped up at 1908 Hillsborough Street advertising the opening of the beloved Durham staple Locopops. Without an opening date posted on the window, it was anyone’s guess when the company would open their doors. But, just in time for a warm sunny February Saturday, the wait is now over. Locopops opened its doors on Friday and I popped in today to check out the selection and space.

Like many people from Raleigh (and I mean from Raleigh, as in born in that big old brickpile at the corner of Wade and St. Mary’s) I have a great respect for Durham and Chapel Hill and my own personal little club med, Carrboro. Going out to eat in these cities is a miniature vacation, and there are often truly great meals to be had. This is just the kind of naïve optimism that cost me 120 dollars and any shot at restorative canoodling with a girlfriend too uncomfortable from the high cost and stiff atmosphere, unhappy with her food and therefore not full, and eventually too drunk from the stress-drinking and empty stomach to be a legally consenting sex partner.

Automatic flush toilets are installed in many buildings throughout our city. These fixtures are typically equipped with two methods of flush control: a laser motion sensor triggered by movement within a certain range, and a secondary manual control, similar to all non-automatic toilets. There is an option to disable the automatic sensor such that the manual control is the only method of flushing. When active, these toilets waste an immeasurable amount of water. Why are they still activated in our city at this time of severe water deficit and restriction? Full post.

Night Life
Remember large gold chains, In Living Color, Reebok Pumps, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and the beginning of hip hop music? The transition from the 80s to 90s was a tough one for many, but hip hop was one of the guiding forces that led the way into a new decade. Almost 20 years later this music is still influencing the likes of pop, electro and indie music. From mashups to extreme neon colors, the beats and styles of the late 80s and early 90s are back in fashion. If The Downtown Event Center gets its way, tonight will be a dance filled 90s “House Party” full of Das Efx, early Wu Tang, and who else but Biggie and Tupac. At $50 for the best dressed, the threads should be in full effect. Who want EFX?
