Best of Raleigh: Haircuts
What’s your favorite salon or barber? Where is the best haircut in town? New Raleigh is working on recognizing outstanding local businesses. Lately other publications’ best-of lists left us wanting, and not for what some triangle cross-section loves about Raleigh, but wanting for the authenticity that we know this city has. It’s almost as if Raleigh’s most respected places are the least well known. So today we start accepting nominations for a forthcoming catalog of what folks love in Raleigh.
Taz’s Downtown Market Opens
Taz has an idea about the future of downtown Raleigh and a great one at that. “What if I took your modern suburban supermarket, broke it into four different stores and spread them around in Downtown Raleigh” he stated on Friday. Taz already has one of the four pieces in place and the second one had its soft opening this weekend and will officially open, this Friday, July 4th.
Whole Foods Coming To North Raleigh
Foodies in North Raleigh can rejoice today. Word comes that Whole Foods is coming to Northern Six Forks at its intersection with Strickland. While not definite the N&O says “Regency said it is in final negotiations with the grocer, and all indications point toward Whole Foods as the tenant.” If things go as planned the store should be open for 2010.
Rock & Shop Market
Raleigh has a flourishing market for handmade goods. The periphery supports a healthy craft economy through staples like the farmers market and flea markets across the city. Downtown, throughout the year, we see craft bazaars that pop up for a Saturday with a mix of designers and then dissipate until the next time. This Saturday brings The Rock & Shop Market. Our Picks for Rock and Shop Below The Fold
Eco-Fashion Show Call for Designers
Now that green is the new black and people are recycling jeans to make into building insulation, why not combine the concept of fashion and green design into one big bonanza? Sounds Red-Hot to me. and the Triangle Emerging Green Builders, MorLove and American Vintage agree and need your help to make an event out of it.

Maybe Raleigh just isn’t ready for high-end furniture as some readers have stated. Cherry Modern left Cameron Village over a month ago and now Porto in North Hills has closed its doors.

According to the owners and this craigslist posting, Stuff Consignment is for sale. Or maybe not.
Old World Replaces Modern: Carlton vs. Cherry
As Raleigh continues to mourn the passing of its favorite modern/contemporary furniture store, a replacement for the space in Cameron Village has been chosen. Carlton and Company will now occupy the space where Cherry Modern once stood, and let’s just say that relative to its predecessor, it’s a step into the past—the way past. You now have a couple of options for furniture in the village, old world and very old world.
Lush, Teavana, Try Sports Coming to Crab Tree Valley
Crabtree Valley Mall has been able to reinvent itself repeatedly over the years. Now we are seeing new age brands like Lush and Teavana are coming to the mall, continuing the mall’s push upscale. Raleigh’s Larry’s Beans on the State of Things
Larry Larson is the man behind Raleigh’s Larry’s Beans. Larry’s coffee beans are all fair-trade and are sold up and down the east coast. He started one of the first coffee shops in the area in the early 90’s with progressive ideals. Today he continues to do things with that same moral mindset. Larry on the STOT
The Handmade Market Saturday
The maidens are at it again. Raleigh’s “craft economy” is no joke. The guys and gals around here that make stuff could hardly be called crafty. Markets like Saturday’s Handmade Market are more like chic underground fashion events than anything “crafty.” Vintage 21 will host the event and it will be wedged in between Cinco de Mayo events and buckheads street closing. But once you make it to Vintage 21 there are sure to be many handmade fashion gems by Raleigh’s underground fashion elite. Directions and information at: thehandmademarket.com
Showroom Dummies - Men’s Fashion in Raleigh
When walking past the storefront of the soon to be Black and White Market in Cameron Village recently, I found myself staring at a sea of mannequins and wondering “Where is all the Men’s Fashion in Raleigh, North Carolina?”
Cherry Modern Furniture Closing
Sad news for the modernists in our audience (and staff). GoGoRaleigh brings us word that Cherry is closing. Cherry was the only dealer of brands like Alessi, Knoll, Cassina, Kartell, and Blue Dot between Washington DC and Atlanta. Louis Cherry, a local architect and his wife Ann Marie Baum opened the store, originally on Glenwood Avenue, then moved to Cameron Village last spring.

Revolver Consignment Boutique Moving to Glenwood South
Glenwood South has been a bustling little corridor since the Creamery building was completed about ten years ago. Since, businesses have come and businesses have gone. Some think the changing nature of the area has recently been governed by economics, others think it’s culturally relative. Either way, Revolver Consignment Boutique has decided that the imminent demolition of their current location is reason to sign a new lease and move closer to downtown.
