Pierrot Le Fou

A new print of Pierrot le fou has made its way to Raleigh.  The 10th feature from Jean-Luc Godard will be showing this week at Colony Theater (please see playing times listed below) and on February 15th at the North Carolina Museum of Art as part of their Winter Film series.

Raleigh Tear Downs: The Oaks at Fallon Park

There are many more factors involved besides the scale of tear-down redevelopments.  Obviously, opposite sides can’t agree on the tear-down discussion.  That said, I am going to quickly propose a development integrity rating system to evaluate whole developments or single tear-down-rebuilds.

For the Holidays:  Think Global, Shop Local

image
2007 is coming to a close and that means year end celebrations and rituals.  For some, it’s football, football, football.  For others, it’s travel and family.  My favorite is all the year end “Best of...” lists that swarm the internet, various music publications, and your local NPR station. But for most, it is buying gifts for the various holidays that bookend this time of year.  If giving is a big part of your year end diet, New Raleigh has a few of shopping recommendations that won’t burn your wallet but will give money to some local businesses that serve up swanky, funky and all around great local gifts and services.

Hillsborough and Morgan Roundabout Consensus: Put Community First

image

The group in attendance at the December 11th roundabout hearing advanced the need for a more comprehensive, community-focused plan for the Hillsborough and Morgan street intersection. None of the proposed plans have successfully addressed the community’s initial concerns—slower speeds, better pedestrian access, and less traffic. This project began as a community enhancement project rather than a transit project. The project thus far has catered to the opposite—traffic management with community and pedestrian impact as second priority.

Planning Commission Paralyzed

A dubious debate always ensues on the issue of tear downs in Raleigh.  Individual and group opinion tends to be polemic to the point there is no room for middle ground or civil conversation. Community SCALE, as well as many aware citizens, are in support of regulation that works to tame profit-focused developers who publicly disregard neighborhood character. Real estate and many in the market for these homes think they are improving the neighborhoods. Effective regulation is abstracted by numbers, measurements, codes and jargon--and thus difficult to define. Economics ultimately inform the choices of builders and one thing seems overtly clear: the money behind much of the new residential building, both in design and consequent purchase, is devoid of taste.

Planners take a pass on this one
