For the second year, a unique collaboration between Wake County Public Libraries and Wake County Parks, Recreation, & Open Space will feature the annual Black History Month Celebration at the Wake County Office Park. Free family events will take place in both the Wake County Commons Building and Historic Oak View County Park from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on February 4, 2012 with a hay wagon shuttle operating continuously between the two sites.
Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Lester Thomas, President of the Ujima Group in Cary. He will lead the festivities at the Commons which include moments with
Church of God in Christ Jesus Praise and Worship Mass Choir
Margaret Rose Murray, local radio talk show host and educator
Carol Beck, Quilting and quilt makers
Angel Patrol, dancers from Michener’s Grove Baptist Church
Mary Payne, monologue
Angie Stephens, library storyteller
Ekiti Parapo, Nigerian fashion and dance
Janet Bauer, remarks from Kenya
Martin Luther King Jr. All Children’s Choir
Other keynote activities include presentations by local authors Eleanora Tate and Jacquelin Thomas, film shorts from St. Augustine’s College students, pipe maker Benny Baker and local artist LeGrant Taylor. Children’s activities include a quilting craft and a quiz wheel with prizes. Displays on genealogy and African American history will be featured as well as the Mollie Huston Lee collection. Door prizes will be awarded during the course of the day.
At Oak View Historic Park, Shaw University’s WSHA-FM 88.9 will be doing a live broadcast and a jam session from noon until 3:00 p.m. African cuisine from Mawa’s Taste of Africa will be available for purchase.
