Players’ Retreat is a(n) Burgers restaurant located in Raleigh.
With the smoking ban and Oberlin becoming a one-way street, the PR is once again a good casual spot to enjoy a nice, inexpensive meal. Great burgers and drink selection - particularly if you enjoy Scotch!
The menu promised fresh Black Angus beef, ground on-site and cooked to temperature. Promise kept. A rare authentic medium rare, lavish in its flavor, its juices weeping gently into the soft, steamed sesame bun without sogging it. The patty was neither overly compressed nor spongy, like many of the “Angus” burgers slung through today’s drive-thrus.

The PR is not only a part of Raleigh history, they also have the best burger in town….or at least MY favorite.
The Hawaiian Burger. I cannot say enough good things about it. The meat is juicy and delectable. It’s topped with fresh pineapple and jalapenos, grilled to perfection. It’s cheesy and it’s juicy and it needs nothing. I crave this burger like no other food in Raleigh.
I’ve been ordering it for years (always medium rare), and it’s perfect every time.
Their meatball sub is also excellent, as are the wings.
The PR is cheap and good, and you can stay late and get wrecked. OR you can drink scotch from the most extensive list in Raleigh. I mean, come ON! What more can you ask?
Smoky, dirty, and just plain gross.
