Day 2:  Longest day ever.

Day 2:  Longest day ever.  Starting at 7:30 AM in Raleigh, and ending at 2:53 AM in Indianapolis.

The drive was only supposed to be eight hours… piece of cake.  We had all intentions of arriving in Indy in the early evening, with plenty of time to go catch fellow Raleigh compadres Bowerbirds and Megafaun, both on national tours and playing a show in Indianapolis that night.  However, the night ends up turning out quite differently.

The drive was going as planned.  Then, the inevitable traffic jam.  In the middle of the mountains of West Virginia.  Mountain to the left, mountain to the right, no exits for ten miles or so.  No escaping this one.  Two miles and TWO HOURS later, we were quite eager to see the source of the jam.  Turns out it was a semi truck’s trailer that had caught fire and perhaps exploded.  Ok.  That will due as a proper excuse for epic traffic.  We finally pass it by and head on our way.

Once free, the race was on to make it to Indianapolis in time to go explore.  We finally arrive, and immediately head to Broadripple, a festive neighborhood that can best be described as an oversized, dingier, much more dangerous version of Glenwood South, minus any sort of good restaurants or coffee shops.  We’re feeling a bit lost and are in slight fear of our well-being.  We slowly attempt to weasel the tourmobile through the crowds of stumbling drunks, attempting to find a parking spot where we feel least likely to be robbed.  We finally walk into our first bar at 2:53 AM… just in time for last call.  We have a much-deserved beverage, and prepare to call it a night soon thereafter.

But no.  There is a treat in store for us…

If Broadripple is bigger, dirtier, more dangerous, and lacking good restaurants or shops, then it would seem it is not a version of Glenwood South at all!
