Reasons why we love Omaha:
- It’s the home of Saddle Creek Records, founded by Conor Oberst. The result: a city with a serious appreciation for good music.
- Bowerbirds & Megafaun, two incredible bands both hailing from Raleigh, are playing a show here.
We had been planning to cross paths with Bowerbirds and Megafaun several times over our phototour (you may recall our first attempt in Indianapolis, which was foiled by West Virginia traffic), and this is our first official meet-up. It was really great to see Raleigh folk
again after being on the road, and it’s especially nice when those Raleigh folk happen to play music we adore.
Megafaun was first, and they were flawless. They ended their set with a cover of The Band, deciding to jump off stage and play it in the
middle of the crowd. It was delightfully intimate and reminded me of something that would happen at home in Raleigh.
Bowerbirds set was a nice change, with original drummer Mark Paulson back in the lineup and Megafaun’s Brad Cook on upright bass. The show was beautiful, as always. We managed to sneak around and snap a few shots here and there.
Once the show came a close, we spent some time with them, catching up and exchanging tour stories. However, we all were so fatigued from our individual tours that we decided to retire early, promising to catch up further in Denver, when we all reunite.
