Some colleagues and I just came from lunch.  it was really, really good.  the food is straightforward and yummy.  They have a new chef and a new menu.  it’s worth checking out.

I have to say that I was excited to try this new restaurant and was very disappointed.  The gnocchi was perfect in the sense of being tender inside and crunchy on the outside, but the pesto sauce was pretty much all olive oil with only a few floating basil leaves and a token pine nut or too.  I’m not someone who is normally bothered by greasy dishes, but I couldn’t finish this one even though hungry.  I agree with the previous posts that the wait staff knows very little (if anything) about their wine menu.  I ordered a pinot grigio to play it safe because when have you ever had a bad pinot?  Well, this was as dull as a Gallo.  I couldn’t finish that either.  I like the atmosphere, but I don’t think it’s worth going just for that.

So there we were again, walking down Wilmington St and thought, should we give it another try? Our first experience was, how could I put it, awful. But being open minded, we tried again. We were met by a friendly young girl who quickly got our name and sat us at a table that was less than 12” from the next. After asking the Manager if we could get a booth(1 of 3 that were not sat), she tlod us that unfortunately, they were reserved. Really?? So, we ordered our dinner and appetizers and started to enjoy some wine, great selection by the way. As we finishing our appetizers- soggy balsamic calamari and an Arugula salad that was very bitter, the bread was brought by- great timing. This was one of our original issues with this restuarant. It was smothered with pesto as if someone were angry at it. Not feeling that we had made the right decision, we were now getting more attentive to the surroundings. The couple next to us seemed to be having a problem getting a description of a wine. The server was not prepared, nor was the Manager, who was Russian( I think ) but tried to act Italian-weird. As our entrees arrived ( Pommodorini & Bolognese ) we actually started to get excited, both looked great, steam coming off, colorful. Then the server left without offering cheese or pepper. As we started to eat, the Manager stopped by to see how things were. I told her that we would like to have cheese and pepper, and watched as she asked 3 different people to do it. After about a minute or so, they arrived. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just get it yourself? Or have it on the table? Anyway, Bolognese was good but confusing, it was under the Gravy section but had no Gravy on it? Pommodorini was bland. We have given this restaurant the last try and if after a month, you can’t get it right, looks just like another Italian place. Too bad.

Sometimes a new twist on an old classic is a great thing, and sometimes and old classic should just stay a classic.  Gravy didn’t quite pull it off for us - the veal was too much like post roast, momma would have been disappointed with the lasagna, and the bolognese was less italian and more new england pot roast over egg noodles (it’s all about the spice).  The calamari was average (although one of the better dishes we ordered) and the tiramisu was too heavy with a rustic style cake and was overpowered by coffee.  The bread was tasty - but how do you mess up bread?  A lot of hype - I would skip this one - and head to Sitti, the empire ent. restaurant next door.

As a visiting patron from the Italian North End neighborhood of Boston I can honestly say that the gnocchi with sage & sausage combination was an amazing culinary experience yet to be discovered in the Northeast.

A wide selection of wine was well received, as well as a personal visit from “Chef Rohe” to ensure our meal was well enjoyed.

We were also greeted by Brynne and served by Paul whom will compliment service with personality to any meal.

Gravy redefines the culinary experience of a traditional Italian aficionado.

Excellent food!  Great atmosphere!  It’s so nice to have good Italian food in our area.

I’ve been there twice so far and have had both gnocchi dishes and I can honestly say it is some of the best I’ve ever had.  I used to live in the SF Bay area and would shop for fresh pasta at Molinari’s in North Beach.  This pasta was in that league!  Fresh and prepared the right way with a soft center and char outside.  The “gravy” is well flavored but not overly spiced.  The entire staff, including the chef, was gratious and cool.  I plan on visiting at least once a week for a great pasta fix.

Do not go to this restaurant. You may have heard the food is good, and it may be, but I won’t ever know because my friends and I were TURNED AWAY based on how we were dressed. We were given the “once over” look from the hostess (we are 20-somethings, wearing jeans, mostly t-shirts and sneakers but we realized there was NOT a dresscode when we saw a patron already inside eating that was wearing jeans and flip-flops with a casual t-shirt), and then she called her manager over, who gave us the same look and asked if we had a reservation. We did not, and she promptly told us they were completely booked and could not take us. This was 6:30 on a Wednesday night, and there were only about 8 people eating in the restaurant at the time, with at least 10 tables open. You could see in her eyes that she thought we were not good enough to eat there. We were all completely aware that the cheapest item on the menu was $11, but we wanted good italian food and could afford the high prices, and were prepared for that. But because we didn’t LOOK like we could afford it, she turned us away.

She has lost our business permanently, and hopefully yours too - if you don’t mind being judged before given a chance, eat at Gravy. If you find this as offensive as we did, then do not give Gravy your business. They do not deserve it. Go to Picollo Italia in Cameron Village instead, they are amazing.

I’ve been there twice since opening last night. The gnocchi was salty and I thought the soup spoons weren’t super conducive to brothier soups like their pork cannelloni. I found myself losing half of the liquid to my napkin. The wine list is awesome, the mozz in the caprese is unbeatable… being right out of Italy of course. Try the panna cotta. You’ll see lavender in a whole new light.
