Growth Should Pay its Fair Share for Recreation

July, 14, 2011

Wake County requires developers to set aside land—or pay into a fund—for parks, open space, and recreation when they build new homes. More on Planning Commission Controversy

Bob Geary has a nice summary post written this morning about the controversy around Heather Vance joining the Planning Commision. Lunsford Lane has the facts on how the Planning commission works.  Both articles are well worth the read on this controversial appointment that will be an important part of how the city grows.  Late last week we posted an article imploring the council to endorse Ms. Vance.  New Raleigh’s position is that she is the most qualified candidate and carries citizen’s interests first.

Mayor, Councilman Stalling Heather Vance for Planning Commission

September, 18, 2008

The City Council is considering the next Planning Commission appointee.  The Planning Commission, with a couple or three exceptions, is stacked with (1) developers, (2) developers’ consultants, and (3) random people who know little about planning. For the current opening, a Raleigh citizen named Heather Vance has been nominated and is willing to serve.  She has a degree in planning as well as the professional certification in the field (AICP).  She has worked as a transportation planning consultant and as a local government planner.  She currently is the Communications Director for the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina chapter. So why are Mayor Meeker and Coucilman James West stalling her appointment?
